New Plaques on an Historic Monument
As many of you have read over the last year or so, we have recently completed the relocation of the Gulph Mills Encampment Monument back to its historically accurate location at the actual site of General George Washington’s December 1777 Encampment on his way to winter quarters at Valley Forge. This has been an enormous undertaking for our Monuments Committee members Michael C. Dougherty and Harvard C. Wood, IV., not only with the site planning and preparation, but also with the actual move of the 36,000 lb. boulder monument (cranes and helicopters included).
The original monument was placed by our Society in 1892 – one of the very first monuments our Society’s founding members placed – and after 130+ years and several changes in location, the plaques on the monument needed to be replaced too. We are so very grateful for the generosity of Society member Samuel W. M. Griffin for his generous financial donation to aid in the completion of this important project. We are enormously dependent on the generosity of our members to enable us to pursue worthy projects like this. Thank you, Sam, and we are so proud to have this completed in time for next year’s 250th anniversary of the Gulph Mills Encampment.
